《奔腾年代》描述1930年代著名赛马“海饼干”的真实故事。海饼干是一匹身型娇小的赛马,却出人意料地取得了成功。其经历使其在大萧条之后的美国社会中作为一个励志的形象而存在。
本片的几个主人公都是挣扎在30时代的小人物。查尔斯· 霍华德原本是个成功的商人,但中年丧子的不幸粉碎了他的家庭;瑞德·波拉德的梦想是做个一流的骑师,无奈迫于生计,只得在地下拳赛中和人搏斗;汤姆·史密斯是个善于相马和驯马的伯乐,却无人赏识,郁郁不得志。三个窘迫男人的命运因为一匹名叫“海饼干”的老赛马而出现转机。海饼干身材矮小,腿也不太灵便,被人当作残次品弃之一旁,然而它不服输的天性与顽强的斗志却没有因此泯灭。三个新主人成功唤醒了它的潜能,让它在比赛中大放异彩。
